Angels in Supernatural

Warriors of God
Angels were created by God to maintain heaven and guard the souls of righteous souls. They are beings of light with an immense power, and are generally considered some of the most powerful creatures in the Supernatural universe. They greatly outclass most demons, ghosts or monsters as well as most other supernatural creatures; there are some exceptions.

An angel’s true spiritual form cannot be looked at by most mortals. If a human saw an angel’s true face, it would be overwhelming to them and cause them immense pain and injury, and in some cases, it even causes them to die. Only in some special cases can particular humans look at an angel’s true appearance without lasting effects. Additionally, demons can’t look at an angel in their true form either, at least not without damaging their hosts.
Celestial Hierarchy
In Heaven, there exists a hierarchy to the power system. Strongest of the angels are the Archangels, of which four were originally created. They are the eldest of all God’s angels and are also the strongest, having an immeasurable amount of power and authority. The four archangels are Michael, Lucifer, Raphael and Gabriel, created in that order, and of those four, only Michael remains alive in the Supernatural universe.

Next are the Seraphim, of which only two are known. Castiel and Akobel (deceased) were Seraphs imbued with immense power, greatly surpassing regular angels. Their current role is unknown, but Castiel was sent to earth to watch humanity and learn about them. On the same level are the Grigori, though they have been extinct for some time after being corrupted.

There are a number of different types and variations of angels still, and lastly the regular angels make up the bulk of Heaven’s numbers. They are essentially the foot soldiers.

Nephilim, the half-angel half-human off-spring of an angel, were prohibited from being born and hunted for a long, long time, as Heaven considered them far too powerful to roam the world. Since those rules have changed, many Nephilim have come out of hiding, and are only now making their way out into the world.
