The Impala

Baby: The Most Famous Car in Television

The 1967 Chevrolet Impala, affectionately known as Baby, is far more than the Winchester brothers' mode of transportation. She is the third main character of Supernatural, a rolling symbol of home, family, and the open road. For Sam and Dean, the Impala is the one constant in a life of chaos, the place where they are most themselves.

Passed down from their father John Winchester, the black Impala has carried the brothers across hundreds of thousands of miles of American highway. Its trunk is a hunter's arsenal, packed with weapons, holy water, salt, and every tool needed to fight the supernatural. The car has been rebuilt, possessed, and even served as the boys' home during their childhood.

More Than Metal and Chrome

In the Supernatural narrative, the Impala represents the brothers' bond. Chuck himself noted that the Impala was the most important object in the universe. It has witnessed their greatest victories and their most painful losses. The army man jammed in the ashtray by a young Sam, the Lego brick shoved into the vent by a young Dean -- these details make the car a character in its own right.
