Demons in Supernatural
The Forces of Hell
The polar opposite of angels, demons are created from human souls that have gone through extreme torture in Hell. This process corrupts them and makes them evil as well as very powerful. Because they are spiritual entities (like angels), they need a vessel before they can fully interact with the physical, human world. They can, however, roam freely in their smoke form.
There are several different kinds of demons, ranging from crossroad demons to white-eyed demons and many in-between. The powers they possess depends on their strength and type, but demons generally enjoy pain and chaos, engaging in torture and destruction either because it's fun or to avoid getting tortured themselves.

The Hierarchy
There is the military hierarchy, as well as the royal hierarchy. The former describes the tiers belonging to Lucifer's army of demons. At the top are the white-eyed demons who are essentially Lucifer's second-in-command. Then come the yellow-eyed demons. They are considered the demon army's generals. The red-eyed demons are the dealmakers, also known as crossroad demons who make deals with humans in exchange for that human's soul. Last are the black-eyed demons; they are mindless drones who are simply soldiers, and make up the bulk of Hell's army. These include the Knights of Hell, who are essentially a stronger variety of black-eyed demon.
The royal hierarchy consists of only three tiers, with the Ruler of Hell sitting at the top. They hold all authority in Hell. Under the Ruler come the Princes of Hell who are said to be the next in line, essentially the heirs to the throne. They were the first generation of demons created by Lucifer, surpassed only by Lilith who was created before them. She is also the only one who can match their claim to the throne of Hell. The Princes are Azazel, Ramiel, Dagon, Asmodeus and Belial - they are all deceased.
Finally we have the Ruler of the Crossroads, who has a similar position to the Ruler, as in that they rule over all crossroad demons/red-eyed demons. This demon does sit firmly at the bottom of the royal hierarchy however.
