Wife, mother, hunter. Mary Winchester, formerly Campbell, is one of the female powerhouses of the later seasons of the show. With her way of dealing with and handling problems in her way, forming an entity all of her own, her presence in the fandom is a breath of fresh air.
Who is Mary Winchester?
Mary Winchester is the late mother of Sam and Dean Winchester and the wife of John Winchester. Her death leads to John Winchester becoming a hunter and raising his sons Sam and Dean to become hunters as well. She was a huntress like many others of her family and was allied with the British Men of Letters during her lifetime. She has excellent willpower and, especially in the twelfth season, has a huge repertoire of skills that you would expect a hunter to have. During her lifetime, it becomes clear how important her family is to her. She has no hesitation in immediately giving her life to protect Sam and Dean, but resents the fact that her sons have become hunters because of her death, a fate she spared her sons and never wanted for them.
Over the course of the three later seasons, she learns to see Castiel and Jack as part of her family, just like Sam and Dean.
Mary Winchester's appearance
Mary Winchester usually wore a nightgown in the early seasons of the series, as she never appeared outside the scene with her in the house where she died.
She had long blonde hair, which she cut off after her resuscitation. She also dressed more in modern style after her revival as a sign of how adaptable she was despite the fact that she had been dead for 33 years and was actually 29.
Mary Winchester's story
S1
Mary Winchester is killed in a pact with the demon Azazel at the beginning of the series and is bound to the place of her death as a ghost. After saving her sons' lives in one of the early episodes of the show,
she ascends to heaven, where John Winchester is also believed to be after his death.
S11-12
Mary Winchester is brought
back to life by Amara in the season finale of the eleventh season as a thank you to the Winchesters. You can tell that
she is having difficulty finding her way around. Although she tried to use the hunt to forget how little she could fit into a world that had changed so much,
she could hardly hide how much she didn't belong in this time. This even drives her to leave the bunker, even though the rest of her family is in it.
She bonds with the British men of letters, much to the discomfort of Sam and Dean. With the help of the Men of Letters,
she works out a plan to rid the world of monsters once and for all and begins to keep secrets from her sons until she realizes that they have motives towards the Winchesters that are very disturbing, forcing her to take action against them and reunite with her sons.

S13
After she protects her sons from Lucifer, Mary Winchester is transported with him to a parallel world known only as the Apocalypse World. There she is put through the wringer by the Archangel Michael of this universe, but then rescued by Jack Kline, Lucifer's son.
They join the rebellion against Michael and work with the Resistance until they are brought back to their own universe by Sam and Dean.
S14
Mary, now living outside the bunker with Donna Hanscum, another hunter, is finally killed, almost by accident, by a soulless Jack Kline, whose destructive power was meant for someone else. She ascends to heaven and is reunited with John Winchester in an almost heartbreaking (and for the boys really weird) scene.
