Sam Winchester, the well-known little brother of Dean Winchester, is a successful hunter, temporary vessel of Lucifer, and a member of the Men of Letters. He was born on May 2, 1983, four years after Dean, and is the second son of John and Mary Winchester. He is a part of the combined bloodlines of the Winchester and Campbell families and therefore a descendant from Cain and Abel. Due to that, Sam and Dean were destined to kill each other but they would not be the Winchester brothers if they could not find a way around that little problem.
In the series, we meet Sam Winchester for the first time when he was 6 months old, on the day his mother died. This event scarred the brothers for the rest of their lives. Sam grew up with hunting lessons from his father yet he dreamed of a life outside of the supernatural. He left his family to study law at Stanford University in California. He lived a peaceful life as a student until his brother Dean showed up one day to drag him back into the life of a hunter in order to help him find their father who had suddenly disappeared. Sam declined Dean's pleas to help him but changed his mind after his girlfriend died the same way his mother had died when he was a toddler.
Sam, aka Sammy, is a very kind, empathetic, and intelligent young man who strives for independence but he can also be very stubborn and arrogant. He is way more thoughtful than his brother and very conscientious which often makes him the “voice of reason” in the dynamic of the two brothers. He is known to be mentally strong which goes back to him being possessed by Lucifer. Sam managed to overcome the possession and gain back control over his body.

It’s not clear what kind of eye color Sam has. Sometimes they appear light green and sometimes brown. His light brown hair has slight waves which grows over the series. He has wide shoulders and a muscular body type. He often gets complimented on that so there are no doubts why he has a few relationships over the course of the series. He is 6’4” tall, slightly taller than Dean. He often wears checked shirts and hoodies in combination with some jeans.

Sam is against the idea of killing people which shows due to him not enjoying the life of a hunter unlike Dean and yet, as the series progresses, he realizes the importance of their job and that he would not be able to live a normal life because of it. Sam consumes way less alcohol than Dean and tries to eat a healthy diet. He is very selfless which can be seen in his many sacrifices for humanity and mankind. His personality shifts drastically after the loss of his brother, making him very aggressive and angry.
Sam Winchester functions as the coordinator of the team. He looks up information about their cases and creates strategies. He can connect specific information faster than Dean and his knowledge about the supernatural seems endless. That is the reason Dean calls him the “walking lexicon”. After being fed demonblood by The Yellow-Eyed Demon, Sam turns into a “special child” from Azazel which grants him supernatural abilities. After the demon was defeated, Sam struggled with using these powers.
Sam Winchester can have visions and has a small sense of telekinesis. He is immune to demon attacks and possesses super strength. It is also possible for him to exorcize demons by pure willpower. As long as he consumes demonblood, he is able to weaken demons by putting them under extreme pain. He also has a sixth sense which grants him the ability to feel the presence of supernatural beings, making it easier for him to identify potential threats beforehand.
